BLOG POST #7: Selection Goals For Your Seed Crops
For each of the three
seed crops I have selected- Lactuca Sativa Reines des Glaces, Allium porrum King Richard, Beta Vulgaris Early Wonder Tall top- the selection goals are ideally to preserve for the next generation, adapt to Salt Springs regional environment, and produce commercial quantities of seed.
Selection for Key Phenotypic Traits :
Lactuca Sativa Reines des Glaces
Looking for a loose crisp head, emerald dark green colour, with jagged tooth leaves wrapping a a crunchy white heart. Looking for bolt resistant, in cold and hot temperatures. Resistance to molds and downy mildew. Looking for medium size heads.
Beta Vulgaris Early Wonder Tall top
Looking for tall, glossy, green leaves with red stems and slightly flattened dark red roots 3-4 inch in size. Looking for germination in cool temperature/ soils and vigorous growth, plants have staggered maturity allowing for extended harvest.
Allium porrum King Richard
Looking for Light-green upright leaves with a slender and tall white stem that can reach 12 inches in length. Early maturing, and non-bulbing.
